Regarding the 3 freeze plugs, basically sb400s have 3 plugs on each side. Although there is an exception. Late production 400s have provision for 3 plugs but some only have a boss where the center plug would be. My two piece has a driver's side dipstick. Supposedly '86 started the one piece. However, there have been signs that some late '85s had the '86 engine design in them. Thee best way to tell on a dressed engine is this, look at the pics that Jim posted again. The tall deck will have a raised boss on the front somewhat passenger side of the front of the block. It will stick out to the front about 3/8" of an inch, and almost come up to the level of the intake manifold rail. This will have a 1/8" pipe plug. The 454 can be ID'd by the balancer having the inner hub cast with an integral counterweight (see image below). A 454 will also have a different flexplate/flywheel, having an added counterweight that is missing from the other displacement BBC engines. Like the SBC aftermarket dampers, the counterweight of a 454 damper might be bolted to the hub.
